Under 19's
If I were to say that this year so far has been easy, I would not be telling you the truth. It has been very different. John Guyler, myself and Jonathan Guyler took the reins of the under 19 team In June.
John and I had been managing and coaching with west park for many years before coming to rossvale assisted by Jonathan. We were asked by Ian Grey the chairman if we would be interested in taking the team on.
Our tenure at west park appeared to be coming to an end we had considered a rest from football howvever, when you have the bug it is very hard to let go. We both considered our options and weighed up the vision, drive and ambition that rossvale seemed to portray. Suddenly we found ourselves excited about a new start with a new team.
As pre season started we had the opportunity to get a few friendly games in and were able to cast an eye over our players. Unfortunately a few of the squad were considering other options and within a month our squad became somewhat depleted.
It did not take long however for us to find others that were interested in playing. Over the coming months we were to discover that the hardest task would be how to keep a full squad considering jobs, illness and injury.
This trend seems to be something that has plagued us, but to give credit to the lads in the team we have never not played a game yet (barring cancellations due to bad weather) even though we once played with only ten men and a few games we have only managed to have 11 players turn up.
The effort in these games by the boys has been quite inspirational given the circumstances.
We have just this week 24/01/2010 been knocked out of the western region cup, beaten 2-1 by Gourock. This was one of those games where we only had 11 players. It was a very hard well fought game and we were leading 1-0 by the 60th minute. by the 75th we had to treat an injured player. On the few minutes he was off, gourock scored, Another of our players took a knock and we became weakened and started to tire and feel the strain as gourock pressed on to score the winnner. we made a few simple mistakes and were unfortunately penalised for them, but we will learn. I cannot slate the boys performance as they gave their all and performed to a very good level.
In my mind we were victims of circumstance we had only 11 players if we had substitutes, I firmly believe that we would be the team through to the next round.
We are now beginning to see boys returning from long term injuries which will be a great boost for the team and some players that left are now returning to the fold. I now expect things to look better than they have for a while.
We are currently sitting third in the league and hope that we can consolidate this with some solid winning performances in the coming weeks.
